Thanks for this memory: Representing the Hope Estate
Lucille Ball and Jack Benny chatted over cocktails. Bing Crosby serenaded guests after dinner. The President helicoptered in for golf. It’s said that only the White House hosted more celebrities and politicians than the Hope Estate. This time, we aren’t just selling a property. We’re representing an American icon. Toluca Lake is synonymous with our Toluca Lake expert Craig Strong, and he’s handling the listing. Offered at $23,000,000, the walled, gated and utterly private 5+-acre retreat includes a nearly 15,000 square foot main house with eight bedrooms and eight baths, a two-bedroom guest house and staff quarters. Designed for the couple by celebrity architect Robert Finkelhor on the site of a former walnut grove, the English Traditional manor was redone in the ‘50s by Hollywood Regency style king John Elgin Woolf. It’s been regularly and tastefully updated over the years. Daughter Linda remembers that her mother liked to add a room or two when her father was away. "When Dad came back, she’d joke that he'd need a road map to find the bedroom," she says. It’s hard to imagine a more quintessential reflection of expansively warm, character-filled Southern California living. The Hopes were avid entertainers, and their estate was always a key celebrity destination, the site of countless star-studded gatherings over the decades. (President Nixon once arrived on the lawn by helicopter for a tee-off at nearby Lakeside Golf Club.) The listing has caused an international stir — and it’s no wonder. As LA Observed noted, it “just might be the most true-blood celebrity estate left in the San Fernando Valley …. There's really no intact Valley property with as much Hollywood (or American) lore in its DNA.”
