Aaron Kirman lists Craig Ellwood’s iconic Mid-Century Moore House
Moore House, a consummate example of the dramatic, open, elegant houses that made Craig Ellwood a mid-century media star, has been listed by Aaron Kirman, president of Aaroe Estates, the luxury properties division of upscale residential brokerage John Aaroe Group. Built in 1965, the approx. 1,701 square foot home sits on 0.3 acres of city view land at 4791 Bonvue Avenue in Los Feliz Hills. It is listed at $2,995,000. Ellwood is celebrated for his skill in fusing the formalism of Mies van der Rohe with the easy style of California modernism. He was named one of the three best architects of 1957, along with van der Rohe and Frank Lloyd Wright. Three Ellwood houses were included in Arts and Architecture Magazine’s iconic Case Study House series, and his visionary residences and public projects like Pasadena’s Art Center College of Design continue to inspire Mid-Century Modern fans. Ellwood’s goal was to create minimalist homes that aimed to maximize space and sunlight. In Moore House, his use of steel and glass, organically tucked into a nook of trees and plants, is exceptional for its subtlety and simplicity. From the entry, the view sweeps all the way to the backyard and surrounding rustic setting. Visiting it during a MAK Center for Art and Architecture tour, one writer compared it to walking into another world. “Basically, the house is one big glass rectangle,” he said. “In a word: amazing.” “Moore house is an especially important example of Ellwood’s work,” says Kirman. “It’s an honor to be representing such a significant piece of history.”
