Melanie Mar shapes Hollywood Hills estate from the ground up
Melanie Mar has been a teen model, a reality TV relationship specialist and a professional life coach. But her biggest passion has always been design in all its forms. Recently, she took that fascination to the next level, developing and designing a striking architectural estate above the Sunset Strip from the first siting to the last decorative detail. Mar’s fascination with design dates to her teenage years as a print and runway model, when her discerning eye for detail and unique creative flair were already attracting notice. After designing and developing her own apparel line, she turned her attention to renovating and developing houses in her native England. While buying four homes at an auction with her mum, she noticed something. “We were the only women in the room,” she says. Today, she loves bringing femininity and sensuality to the man’s world of architecture and construction. Several years in the making, the 1489 Stebbins Terrace home by Melanie Mar Design was recently listed at $7,500,000 by Aaron Kirman, President of Aaroe Estates, the international luxury property division of John Aaroe Group. Mar custom-designed every aspect of the gated, three-level residence to make the most of its long, panoramic location on a hillside cul-de-sac. In the living/dining area, Fleetwood pocket doors vanish, seamlessly blending the long poolside and dining deck into the indoor space. The saltwater pool overlooks the view, and a dramatic, wall-spanning fire feature, visible on approach to the home, warms and lights the area. In every room, massive glass walls and oversized windows open to the city lights below. In the second-level master suite, steps lead up to a 700-square-foot covered view deck with built-in bar. iPhone apps control all systems, from Wi-Fi to fireplace, pool and gate. From the floor plan and materials to the final colors and finishes, Mar meticulously orchestrated every element of the Hollywood Hills residence inside and out. No detail escaped her attention, down to the superbly custom-built garage. “My goal,” she says, “was to create a livable piece of art where all the facets blended to inspire an instant emotional connection.” Mar is already considering several new projects. Whatever she chooses, one thing is certain: the next Melanie Mar Design will reflect her sensitive touch and uniquely detailed eye in a beautiful, distinctive way.
