In Place: Encino
Not all celebrity Encino owners turn their homes into European fantasies. But the city has been known as the Bedroom of the Stars since Al Jolson was mayor in the 1930s. Movie, music and sports names have long been attracted the peace and solitude of this central Valley community set on green mountain slope just minutes from Hollywood and West LA. Residents have included Clark Gable and Carole Lombard, Ron Howard, Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Petty, John Travolta, John Wayne, Dave Grohl, Johnny Carson, Mickey Rooney, Marc Anthony and Johnny Cash. The town has a rich history as a film location, too; the town of Bedford Falls in It’s a Wonderful Life was constructed here. The saga of the whole San Fernando Valley began in this spot. It was named Encino (“oaks”) in 1769, when Spanish explorers first ventured up the Sepulveda Pass, camping in a Gabrielino Indian village under massive oak trees. In 1985, the remains of that village were unearthed at the southeast corner of Balboa and Ventura Boulevards. More than two million artifacts were recovered. Today, locals enjoy gorgeous drives along the ridge of the Santa Monica Mountains to the sea, and nature walks in the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve — one of the few areas on the Los Angeles River specifically set aside for wildlife.
