He was a silent era superstar with a mansion to match

Shaded by lush, mature trees, the hilly streets of Los Feliz are home to some of LA’s most magnificent mansions. Its serene private enclaves are just a short drive from the fine dining and nightlife of Los Feliz Village, and minutes from Griffith Park and the Greek Theater. One of the area’s gems is the palatial Mediterranean Revival estate of triple-threat silent era powerhouse Victor Schertzinger. The property at 4120 Cromwell Avenue has just been listed by John Aaroe Group at $7,250,000.

Schertzinger aced it all: Directing, writing, composing. By 1921, when he commissioned this lavish Los Feliz compound, his reputation was beyond golden — and he was determined to build a residence to match. Today, his grand estate by noted architect Frank L. Meline, set on over an acre with panoramic views of LA, preserves all its astonishing artistic details: painted and coffered ceilings, mural-embellished doors and wall panels, elaborate tile work, stained glass and baroque window treatments.

The compound includes a two-story, 6,655 square foot main residence; a romantic lute-shaped pool with pool house; a dining pavilion; a tennis court; a separate guest house; and a five-car garage once home to Schertzinger’s Duesenberg and his wife’s chauffeured Pierce Arrow. The lush gardens and grounds are by renowned landscape architect Mark Roy Daniels, designer of Pebble Beach’s famous 17 Mile Drive and LA’s Bel Air neighborhood. The property includes five separate lots with two buildable parcels.

Even though Schertzinger’s star was among the first to be installed on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, few recognize his name today. His brilliance lives on in films from silent classics to Bob Hope “Road” pictures … memorable songs … and one magnificent mansion, ready for its next glamorous closeup. For more information, contact listing agent and Director of Aaroe Estates Bryan Abrams.
