And the Best Performance by a Home goes to …

OK, it’s not a category. But in view of all the houses that have played key roles in famous movies — or played home to their stars — maybe it should be. In looking for examples, we’d hardly know where to start if we hadn’t just listed this lavish two-story Colonial Revival on Mapleton Drive in Holmby Hills at $22,850,000 listed by Sally Forster Jones President, Aaroe International Luxury Properties.

The elegant address was designed in 1939 by Robert Finkelhor, architect of the Bob Hope Estate - currently on the market and listed by Craig Strong, Barbara Stanwyck’s Oakridge equestrian spread, and many other celebrity mansions. His client this time was legendary director Allan Dwan, who worked with mega-stars from Mary Pickford to John Wayne over his 50-year career.

In 1981, the house itself played a starring role as Joan Crawford’s residence in the film Mommie Dearest. Its magnificent two-story foyer staircase was replicated on the Paramount lot for Faye Dunaway’s grand entrance as Crawford, and the lavish children’s birthday party in the film was shot around the home’s pool.

Just down the road is a massive traditional home and guest house designed by “The Hollywood Society Architect,” Gerard R. Colcord, currently listed at $25,000,000 listed by Aaron Kirman, President, Aaroe Estates and Neyshia Go, Director, Aaroe Estates. He built the residence for ‘40s mega-star Alan Ladd and his actress wife, Sue Carol. During the Cold War era, Ladd added a bomb shelter. It’s since been repurposed as a wine cellar.

These are just two of the celebrity addresses on Mapleton Drive. Set in the “Platinum Triangle,” one of the most desirable neighborhoods in the country, the street has been a prime star enclave for decades, with residents from Bing Crosby, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall to Ellen DeGeneres and Portia DeRossi. Plus the Playboy and Spelling mansions. While none of Mapleton’s homes have won Academy Awards, we’d bet quite a few have rested on their living room mantels.
