Northern California Mid-Century masterpiece by Daniel Liebermann

Looking as if it arose fully formed from the soaring redwoods around it, flooded with morning light and soothed by the sound of Cascade Falls, this home could only have been conceived by Daniel Liebermann. A student of Frank Lloyd Wright and a trailblazer in green design and organic architecture, Liebermann designed homes he described as “a celebration of synthesis with wild materials.”

His circular 1962 masterwork, at 861 Lovell Avenue in Mill Valley, is constructed entirely of old-growth redwood and glass. It’s wrapped in unbroken forest views on every side, making it feel like a magnificent tree house. The interior is defined by fanned-out beams and sweeping brick interior arches that appear almost freestanding. Situated on over an acre of pristine, private land, the home has been owned and treasured by the same family for over 50 years.

Listed by Marylisa Tencer and Eric McFarland of our Pacific Union Mill Valley office, the two-bedroom, two-and-a-half bath main house and adjacent one-bed, one-bath guesthouse define the epitome of indoor/outdoor living, with every space flowing to the outdoors. To the west, afternoon sun bathes the courtyard and swimming pool. To the south, an open expanse of beautifully maintained redwood trees frames the vista across the canyon.

This is a remarkable opportunity to own a masterwork by an inspired architect who designed only a few carefully crafted gems. “I don’t believe he completed more than about a dozen houses, all of them in California,” says architectural author Richard Olsen. “But every one relates to nature with perception-altering originality.”
