A menswear rock star offers his Modernist treasure

It’s not surprising that an international designer would be drawn to the work of Howard Lane, a visionary LA Modernist architect and onetime student of Mies van der Rohe. Now Lane’s Schustack Residence is on the market — for only the second time in its history.

Set on 19,000 square feet at the base of the Hollywood Hills near Wattles Garden Park, the Mid-Century post and beam at 1816 Stanley Avenue is listed at $3,499,000 by JB Fung and Brian Courville. The owner has added touches of his Zen-based aesthetic (including the addition of a serene and period-perfect kidney-shaped pool) while honoring its original design.

Lane spent much of his career creating modern commercial landmarks like the Neo-Streamline Moderne Travelers Insurance Building on Ventura Boulevard, working with giants like Skidmore Owens & Merrill, A.C. Martin, and Pereira and Luckman. The Schustack Residence is one of his few residential projects — and a rare reflection of his mastery of space, light and environment. Slender clerestory windows, sleekly rich wood paneling and a wall-sized glass doors off the patio and the master bedroom are just a few of the home’s Modernist touchstones. Curated with care, it’s now ready for its next fortunate fan.
